Polls Atmosphere: Kamal pins hopes on army role

Jatiya Oikyafront Convener Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday hoped that the army would create an atmosphere where voters could cast their votes safely in the tomorrow's election.

“My earnest request to the beloved countrymen and voters again, protect the country's independence and your ownership by casting your precious votes on December 30 without any hesitation,” he said in a statement.

Oikyafront leader Jaglul Haider Afrik read it out at a press conference in the alliance's central office.

The eminent jurist added that the country's people, especially the voters, are now the Oikyafront's hope. The people, who never failed to take any timely, bold and right decision in the past, will not make any mistake this time as well. They will go to polling stations unitedly, braving all sorts of fear and intimidation.

Kamal, also Gonoforum president, urged people to take part in the polls for the sake of democracy, take back the country's ownership and make the country's independence meaningful.

He claimed that over 10,000 Oikyafront leaders and activists were arrested till December 26 after announcement of the election schedule on November 8.

He also alleged that drives were going on to detain polling agents assigned by Oikyafront candidates.

Kamal, one of the main architects of the country's constitution, called upon all to refrain from such unfair activities.

The Oikyafront convener said law enforcement agencies launched a “combing operation” on Thursday night to arrest its leaders, activists and supporters.

“But such oppression and wholesale arrest won't be able to stop the Oikyafront from moving forward.”

He said all sorts of steps are being taken to keep the Oikyafront from the polls. But despite all odds, the alliance has been trying to stay in the election race.

Candidatures of over 23 Oikyafront aspirants have been scrapped or suspended by court and there is no alliance contender in those constituencies, he added.

Against this backdrop, Kamal said the Oikyafront demanded re-scheduling of election in those places, but this “logical” demand was not met.

He said despite repeated requests to the Election Commission, there was no change in the attacking attitude of members of law enforcement agencies. “Rather, number of attacks is increasing day by day.”
