A total of 20 candidates, including 18 BNP contenders, have lost candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary polls following the orders from the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court in the last one week.

The apex court today disqualified candidacies of 12 candidates including 10 BNP nominees from contesting the December 30 general election.

The candidates who lost their candidacy today are: Faridul KabirTalukdar (BNP) for Jamalpur-4, Fazlur Rahman (BNP) for Joypurhat-1, Abdul Majid (BNP) for Jhenidah-2, Mahmud Hasan Suman (Awami League’s rival and independent) for Mymensingh-8, Abu Sayeed Chan (BNP) for Rajshahi-6, Md Asaduzzaman (Awami League’s rival and independent) for Rangpur-1, Md Moslem Uddin (BNP) Brahmanbaria-4, Khondokar Abu Ashfaq for Dhaka-1, Tamiz Uddin (BNP) for Dhaka-20, Abdul Hannan (BNP) for Chandpur-4, Amjad Hossain Sarker (BNP) from Nilphamari-3 and Morshed Miltan (BNP) for Bogura-7.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Md Nuruzzaman upheld the HC orders that had disqualified 11 candidates on different grounds.

It includes ten candidates whose candidacy were cancelled as their resignation from the post of upazila chairmen were not accepted by the government and Hannan, one of the 11 candidates, was disqualified as he is a loan defaulter.

The apex court chamber judge also stayed a HC order that directed the EC to allow Amjad Hossain Sarker, chairman of Syedpur upazila in Nilphamari, to contest the election, Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu told The Daily Star.

The SC chamber judge today passed the orders in line with the Appellate Division’s full bench’s directives that disqualified some sitting upazila chairman considering the office is profitable, Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque, the lawyer for their rival candidates, told our correspondent.

Earlier, the Appellate and HC Divisions gave orders, disqualifying BNP contenders--- M Rashiduzzaman Millat for Jamalpur-1, Tahsina Rushdir Luna for Sylhet-2, Syed Jahangir Alam for Dinajpur-3, Abdul MuhitTalukder for Bogura-3, Sarkar Badal for Bogura-7, Nadim Mostafa for Rajshahi-5, Afroza Khan for Manikganj-3 and Golam Rabbani for Rangpur-5.

Meanwhile yesterday, the SC chamber judge upheld the HC orders that had directed the EC to allocate BNP’s election symbol “Sheaf of Paddy” to its four candidates in place of other four rival contenders who were earlier allocated the same symbol.

Prof Nazrul Islam will get Sheaf of Paddy in place of Nadim Mostafa for Rajshahi-5, Kamrun Nahar Shirin will get “Sheaf of Paddy” in place of Monjurul Islam Bimal for Natore-1, Khandker Abdul Hamid Dabliu will get “Sheaf of Paddy” in place of SA Kabir Jinnah for Manikganj-1, Mostafizur Rahman will get “Sheaf of Paddy” instead of Khalek Chowdhury for Naogaon-1 and Masuda Momin will get “Sheaf of Paddy” in place of Abdul MuhithTalukder for Bogura 3, DAG Sazu told The Daily Star.
