Latif Siddiqui quits poll race

Abdul Latif Siddiqui, an independent candidate of Tangail-4, has decided to quit the election race.

Latif Siddiqui went to the Election Commission this noon and informed it about his decision.

"… I am not contesting the election. Ideal environment, scope of free participation and peaceful situation are not prevailing at any of the places in my electoral area," Latif Siddiqui said in a letter which he submitted to the EC.

Before leaving the EC office, he distributed copies of the letter among the journalists to inform about his decision.

Siddiqui started a fast unto death in front of Tangail returning officer’s office on December 17 protesting an attack on his motorcade on the previous day.

On December 19, he was taken to a local hospital after he fell sick. Later, he left the hospital to get admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka.

WHAT HAPPANED ON DECEMBER 16?

At least 10 people were hurt and four cars were vandalised during an attack on the motorcade of Latif Siddiqui.

After the attack, Latif alleged that 20 to 25 supporters of Awami League candidate for the constituency Hasan Imam Khan Sohel Hazari threw brick chips at his motorcade.

He claimed that when they took shelter in a nearby house, the attackers swooped on them.
