HC okays BNP leaders Tuku, Dulu for polls

The High Court today cleared the way for BNP leaders Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu to contest in the election.

It directed the Election Commission to accept their nominations and stayed the previous rejection order of the returning officers.

The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after disposing two writ petitions challenging the EC order.

The returning officers concerned had rejected the nomination papers of Tuku and Dulu as they were convicted and sentenced in separate criminal cases.

The EC later on, upheld the returning officers' decision.

Dulu and Tuku in their writ petitions said that the HC has stayed their convictions and sentences handed by the lower court in the cases against them.

The High Court today passed the order in favour of Tuku and Dulu as their conviction and sentences have been stayed by the High Court.
