Govt using cops, admin to reclaim power: BNP

BNP today reiterated allegation that the government is plotting with the administration and law enforcers to reclaim power through a lopsided election.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed came up with the allegation at a briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office around this afternoon.

“According to media reports, the IGP (police chief) has called all DIGs and SPs to Dhaka. They have made a list of 2.5 lakh BNP leaders and activists for arrests to clear the field ahead of the election,” Rizvi alleged in the press conference.

“This is mainly to thwart the mass public support created in favour of the ‘sheaf of paddy’ despite all the harassments, arrests and cases filed against the party’s men,” he claimed.

The BNP leader also said that the government has realised its imminent downfall and is resorting to multifaceted conspiracy to hang on to power.

“Ever since Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance decided to join the polls, it became a grave concern for the Awami League-led government. According to intelligence agencies, they have come to know that they would concede defeat in the polls.”

‘MINORITIES WILL ALSO BE USED’

“We have proof that on December 10 a meeting was held at the Police Headquarters with minority community leaders to bring the people from minority communities to the field to garner support for the government,” he said.

“However, the government is plotting to launch attacks on the minority people and put the blame on BNP and Oikyafront’s shoulder in order to make the international community think that the minorities would not be safe if the alliance comes to power,” the BNP leader alleged.

Rizvi also claimed that the administration and law enforcement is doing everything to keep the BNP and Oikyafront men away from the polls field while armed goons of the ruling quarter are making showdowns across the country in broad daylight.

“Still, we will overcome all obstacles and fight till the day of the polls. The countrymen are the source of all power, and they are our strength,” he added.
