UN chief condoles death
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has deplored the shooting incident that killed a Bangladeshi peacekeeper and injured another of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma).
Ban called on the Malian authorities to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice, according to a statement of spokesman for the secretary-general on May 28.
The UN chief also expressed his sincere condolences to the family of the victim and the government of Bangladesh. He also wished the injured peacekeeper a quick recovery.
Ban reaffirmed the willingness of Minusma to cooperate closely with the Malian authorities in this effort.
Bangladeshi soldier Nilkanto Hajong was killed and another soldier Sirajul Islam was wounded as armed men opened fire on a UN vehicle of Bangladesh transport contingent in Bamako, Mali, on May 25.
The body of Nilkanto was yet to arrive in Bangladesh.
Asked when the body may arrive, an official of the Inter-Service Public Relations Directorate told The Daily Star yesterday that the process of bringing back the body was underway and it would be brought home soon.
Condition of Sirajul was good and he was improving, the official added.
