Two hurt as BCL men clash at SUST
Two Chhatra League activists were injured in an internal clash at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet yesterday over ragging a female student.
A first-year female student of mathematics department fell victim to ragging allegedly by some BCL activists and seniors of her department.
Another group of BCL activists protested the incident, leading to the clash around 1:00pm.
Two BCL men were injured, said Akhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station.
They were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
General students said when the female student was going to her department, a male student of the same department asked her to come to a spot near the department around 12:30pm. When she reached the spot, the male student and some other BCL men asked whether she is a first-year student.
They then started asking different questions and hurling abuse at her.
Some general students alleged that supporters of SUST unit BCL President Sanjibon Chakraborty Partha were involved in the ragging.
Another BCL group, which is being led by the unit's general secretary Imran Khan, protested the incident, they added.
Sanjibon, however, denied that his men were involved.
In a meeting last night, SUST proctorial body said it found the allegation of ragging true.
It also proposed taking immediate action against the students involved in the incident, said Proctor Qumruzzaman Chowdhury.
