Internet may remain slow till Jan 30
The temporary disruption to internet services in the country may continue until January 30 due to the maintenance work of the submarine cable.
The maintenance work of Tata Indicom Cable, which provides around half of the internet bandwidth that comes from India to Bangladesh, will take another week, Suman Ahmed Sabir, chief strategy officer of international internet gateway Fibre@Home, told The Daily Star.
Bharti Airtel's submarine cable "i2i Media" which went down due to a cut in fibre connection on December 13 last year, was yet to be restored, Suman said, adding that it might take January 25 to 27 to be restored.
The internet connection would return to normal as soon as the maintenance work of India-Middle East-Western Europe submarine cable would be completed, which Suman expected to happen by January 30.
Bangladeshi users have been experiencing slow internet since January 4 due to technical glitches, including the severed cable.
On January 5, in a press release, Internet Service Providers' Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) said the disruption would continue for the next few days, and internet services will be back in order by January 20.
Bangladesh imports 280 gigabits per second (Gbps) from India out of the country's total bandwidth consumption of over 400 Gbps, while the rest comes from state-owned Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd.
Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company is connected with six Indian cables, three of which went out of order last month.
