He is just a member of lower subordinate staff (MLSS) at the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), but Mobarak Hossain enjoys the luxury which many honest first grade officers can only dream of.
The total amount of proprieties owned by Mobarak and his wife Shahina Parvin Shahin is worth Tk 2.53 crore, of which Tk 1.38 crore has been amassed illegally.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday issued two notices to the couple asking them to submit their wealth statements before it within seven working days.
The anti graft watchdog in its primary enquiry found that Mobarak, posing as a Rajuk high-up, stole documents from different files and indulged in “criminal activities” for money.
After checking the records and documents of Mobarak's wealth, the ACC found that Mobarak got a plot in Uttara's Sector-11 through a lease in 2003. He had paid Tk 9 lakh for the lease, said Investigation Officer Sardar Manjur Ahmmad.
Mobarak had managed to get a design for 1,770 square feet building on the plot approved by Rajuk and took Tk 50 lakh loan from Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation in 2012 to build a seven-storey building there, said Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee, public relations officer of the ACC.
During the time of the construction, he had sold two flats on the fourth floor of the building for Tk 65 lakh. The total expense for the construction of the building is approximately Tk 2 crore, he said.
In 2011, Mobarak bought shares of Delpark Housing Ltd at Tk 2.25 lakh in his wife Shahin's name.
He bought a 166.21 square feet shop in Shahin's name at Uttara Rajuk Commercial Market in 2013. The price of the shop is Tk 30 lakh, the ACC official said.
In 2014, Mobarak's wife inherited a 225.28 decimal land in Jhenidah.
She also got another three kathas of land as Heba Dalil (verbal donation). This piece of land is next to their leased plot in Uttara Sector-11.
The Rajuk staff had built eight tin-roofed houses spending Tk 12.56 lakh on this three katha land.
Pranab said Mobarak and his wife amassed a total of Tk 2.53 crore.
“Of the Tk 2,53,81,895, Mobarak could not show any document for Tk 1,38,81,895,” he said, adding that Mobarak, as it seems, has earned the wealth beyond known source of income.
That is why the commission issued the notice, Pranab said.
The Daily Star could not reach Mobarak for comments.
