PM travels to Switzerland Jan 15
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay a week-long visit to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.
The meeting would be held on January 17-20 in Davos-Klosters under the theme “Responsive and Responsible Leadership”.
Diplomatic sources said over 2,500 leaders from nearly 100 countries would be invited to take part in over 300 sessions of the meeting.
Ahead of the PM's visit, a meeting was held at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday which was attended by several high officials from different ministries.
As per the programme schedule, the PM would leave Dhaka on January 15 and return on 21.
Meanwhile, another inter-ministerial meeting was held at the foreign ministry yesterday with Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque in the chair.
The meeting discussed about the visit of the PM to India likely in early February.
Foreign ministry sources said in Davos, the PM would address a number of sessions of the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting and hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sideline.
The sources said the 47th annual meeting of the WEF would focus on five critical leadership challenges in 2017: strengthening global collaboration, restoring a sense of shared identity, revitalising economic growth, reforming capitalism and preparing for the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
For the first time, a Chinese president, Xi Jinping, will attend the annual meeting.
The co-chairs of the meeting will be Brian T. Moynihan of Bank of America, documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Helle Thorning-Schmidt of Save the Children International, Frans van Houten of Royal Philips and Meg Whitman of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, singer and songwriter and education advocate Shakira, and artist and social activist Forest Whitaker will be awarded with the 2017 Crystal Awards in recognition of their leadership as artists in improving the state of the world at a special session and concert on January 16.
