Zia Charitable Case: HC starts hearing Khaleda’s bail plea
The High Court yesterday started hearing the bail petition of Khalea Zia in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
Defence lawyers -- advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, advocate Zainul Abedin and barrister AM Mahbub Uddin -- argued for Khaleda’s bail before the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman while Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan opposed the petition.
Concluding the proceedings, the HC bench passed an order to resume the hearing at 2:00pm today.
During yesterday’s hearing, Khaleda’s lawyers told the court that no corruption took place in establishing the Zia Charitable Trust.
As the Trust was a private organisation, the government had no scope to interfere in it, they argued.
The defence lawyers said that Khaleda had been suffering from different diseases and she had already served two and a half years in prison in connection with this case. Thus, she deserves bail.
On October 29 last year, Khalea was awarded with seven-year imprisonment by a special court in Dhaka in connection with Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case against Khaleda with Tejgaon Police Station on August 8, 2011.
