Won’t seek govt nod for future rally
The BNP will not seek any permission from the government to hold rallies in Dhaka as the government is “not elected by the people’s vote”, said the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam yesterday.
“We got permission for this rally at 10:00am today [yesterday]. We will not seek permission in the future. Whenever necessary, we will hold rallies and take to the streets as it is our constitutional rights,” he said.
He made the remark while attending a rally in front of its Nayapaltan headquarters which was organised to demand the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
BNP expected to hold the rally on Saturday but did not have permission.
In the rally, other BNP leaders also alleged that the government snatched away people’s right to expression and that was why it did not allow the BNP to hold any rally.
BNP leaders and activists yesterday thronged the meeting venue with placards, festoons, banners with portrays of Khaleda and her BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Vehicular movement in the area came to a halt when the rally took place.
Fakhrul said, “We must unite people of all walks of life and all political parties to wage a mass movement to unseat the government.”
“We have to get united putting aside all divisions among us and organise people to wage a mass movement within a short time to free our leader and restore democracy.”
BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, addressed the rally with Dhaka South City Unit General Secretary Kazi Abul Bashar in the chair.
