UPDF member shot dead in Rangamati
A member of United Peoples Democratic Front was shot dead by a group of unidentified criminals in Vuochara area of Rangamati's Langadu upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Pabitra Chakma alias Toshon, 42, son of Shanti Priyo Chakma of Dharma Para village in Langadu. He had been involved with UPDF since 2001.
Police said Pabitra and another member of UPDF were staying at a house in Vuochara. A group of assailants opened fire aiming the house around 1:30pm, leaving Pabitra dead on the spot. His party colleague, who could not be named immediately, was also injured in the attack.
Ranjan Kumar Samonta, officer-in-charge of Langadu Police Station, said they recovered the body from the spot and sent it to hospital for an autopsy.
In a statement, Sachal Chakma, an organiser of UPDF Rangamati unit, blamed Parbatya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS-MN Larma) for the murder.
He demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.
Prashanta Chakma, information and publicity secretary of PCJSS-MN Larma central committee, denied their involvement in the incident and said the murder could be a result of UPDF's internal conflict.
Earlier on January 19, Piplu Tripura alias Roni, also a member of UPDF, was shot dead by unknown criminals at his house in Gachbaan village of Khagrachhari Sadar upazila.
More than 50 people have been killed over conflicts among UPDF, UPDF (democratic) faction and PCJSS-MN Larma in Rangamati and Khagrachhari in the last two years.
