Tk 66 Lakh Robbery: 4 held in Barguna
Police yesterday detained three more people who allegedly snatched Tk 66 lakh from officials of three companies in Barguna’s Amtali upazila.
On Wednesday afternoon, muggers attacked officials of REW, SEW, and JT Traders near Tiakhali College and took the money. The companies provide manpower to the Payra power plant project in Patuakhali’s Kalapara upazila.
The officials were going to the power plant in a microbus after withdrawing Tk 1 crore from a bank in Barishal city.
Police held Solaiman, Belal, and Nazmul from different areas of Amtali upazila in an overnight drive, said Manoranjan Mistry, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Amtali Police Station.
When the driver stopped the car after finding a van parked on the road and some bamboos lying on the road around 5:00pm Wednesday, some 10 to 12 men on motorcycles ambushed the microbus and vandalised it, said Abul Bashar, OC of the police station.
The muggers then beat up the officials and hacked two -- Jhunu and Tanveen -- as they tried to resist.
The muggers fled the scene with the money meant for paying salaries of 500 workers at the power plant project.
On information, police went to the spot, detained microbus driver Abu Bakar and seized the vehicle, said OC Manoranjan, adding that they found Tk 33.90 lakh inside the microbus later.
The driver was held for his alleged involvement in the mugging, OC Bashar said.
The injured were moved to Dhaka yesterday from Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical.
OC Manoranjan said police were trying to nab the other muggers and interrogating all the detainees.
This correspondent could not contact any officials of the three companies for comments.
