Three killed in ‘shootouts’ in a single day
Three people, including two alleged muggers, were killed in “shootouts” in the capital Dhaka and Jashore early yesterday.
Two alleged muggers, who were killed in a “gunfight” in the city’s Khilkhet area, are Nazmul and Shahin. They stood accused in at least four cases, including murder and mugging, police said.
A police team on Wednesday arrested a mugger who was accused in private university student Mizan murder case. Based on his information, the team raided different areas to detain his accomplices, police said.
The “gunfight” took place when a police team set up a checkpoint at Dumni around 3:45am, said Biplob Bijoy Talukder, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
When the team signalled a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to stop, the criminals opened fire from the vehicle. The law enforcers retaliated, leaving Nazmul and Shahin injured.
The two were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
Police claimed to have recovered a firearm and seized the auto-rickshaw used by the muggers.
Police officials said the two were members of a mugging gang named “Gamchha Party” that killed Mizan during mugging on January 5. Police found his body on Mogbazar flyover.
Police say pretending to be passengers, the gang members used to hire CNG-run auto-rickshaws and share those with commoners.
Finding an isolated place, they mugged the co-riders and pushed them off from the vehicles after blindfolding them.
Sometimes, posing as CNG drivers, they used to pick passengers and took away valuables from them.
Meanwhile, a murder case accused, who was arrested in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, was killed in a “shootout” with detectives in Jashore.
Jewel Hossain, 29, of Jashore Sadar upazila, was one of the prime accused in a case filed in connection with killing of Ansar member Hossain Ali at Hasimpur Bazar on November 30, Tawhidul Islam, additional superintendent of Jashore police, told our Benapole correspondent.
So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the murder, but prime accused Jewel and Munna were on the run. A team of Jashore Detective Branch arrested Jewel from Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday and took him to Jashore later.
Gleaning information from him, the team took him to Hasimpur village to arrest Munna around 4:00am yesterday. Munna and his accomplices fired on the detectives, forcing them to retaliate, said the police officer.
During the “gunfight”, Jewel was hit and rushed to Jashore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the officer, claiming that police recovered two firearms and 12 bullets from the spot.
