‘Serial rapist’ held while trying to flee country
Police arrested an accused in a case filed over raping six minor girls from Jashore’s Benapole on Saturday evening.
Aminur Rahman, the accused, was arrested three days after the case was filed against him.
He was nabbed from Gatipara area along the Bangladesh-India border while he was trying to illegally flee the country, police said. He was then taken to Jashore Kotwali Police Station for interrogation.
Ansar Uddin, additional superintendent of Jashore police in Jashore, said soon after the news of the rape incidents surfaced, police beefed up surveillance in the area. Several drives were also conducted in Jashore town on Friday to arrest him.
Police finally arrested him on Saturday, he added.
Apurbo Hasan, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Aminur admitted to his crimes during primary interrogation and also wanted to give his confessional statement before a court.
He was accused of raping six students of a government primary school in the last two months, after luring them with treats.
The president of the school’s governing body filed a case against him with Kotwali police on Wednesday.
Aminur was a caretaker of a house in Khorki area, where the school is located, in the district town.
The incidents came to light after three of the six students were absent for an exam on April 28.
When school authorities asked them the reason for their absence, the students said that they were raped between April 24 and April 27 by Aminur.
According to locals, Aminur is involved in criminal activities including theft, mugging, and extortion in Khorki area.
He went into hiding after locals were outraged over the rape incidents.
