Rohingya man shot dead in Teknaf camp
A Rohingya man was shot dead allegedly by a group of unidentified criminals while trying to save his younger brother from being kidnapped in Teknaf early yesterday.
The dead is Wasi Ullah, 30, of Alikhali Rohingya Camp at Teknaf’s Hnila union.
Mostafa Kamal, community leader of the camp, said some armed goons shot Wasi at D-block of the camp at night and fled the scene.
The incident happened when some masked men tried to kidnap the victim’s 14-year-old brother Abul Baset and Wasi attempted to foil their bid, said witnesses.
Soon after the incident, some camp residents rushed Wasi to a nearby Gonoshasthaya Centre where doctors declared him dead.
AMSA Doha, inspector (investigation) of Teknaf Model Police Station, said they visited the spot on information of shooting.
The body was handed over to the family after conducting an autopsy at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, he added.
Wasi had been dwelling at the camp since 2017 when he fled his home at Myanmar’s Rakhine State in 2017.
