Rohingya man killed in ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya man, accused in several criminal cases, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Teknaf’s Shalbagan area early yesterday.

The dead is Mahmudul Hasan, 37, of Nayapara Rohingya camp.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station, said they arrested Mahmudul on Wednesday noon over possessing firearms.

After interrogation, a team of police, led by Additional Superintendent Redwan Ahmed, conducted a drive near the Rohingya camp around 1:00am to recover firearms.

As police reached the area, Mahmudul’s associates opened fire at them, triggering a “gunfight”.

At one stage, Mahmudul was shot while others managed to flee. He died of his injuries while being taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Three policemen were also injured in the “gunfight”.

Four firearms, two magazines, 18 bullets and 13 cartridges were recovered from the spot.
