Rape victim’s uncle killed for protesting abuse hurled

A man was stabbed to death and another was injured in Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal upazila for protesting the hurling of abuse at a rape victim on Wednesday night.

The deceased is the uncle of a nine-year-old girl, who was raped recently. The injured is the father of the victim.

The uncle is the plaintiff in a case filed over the rape incident. The FIR accuses Jamal Mia, who has been arrested.

The girl was discharged from hospital on Wednesday night and was returning home, along with her father and uncle. On their way, one Ahad Ali hurled abuse at the girl on Choumohona road around 10:00pm, said Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sreemangal Police Station.

As the father and the uncle protested such remarks, Ahad stabbed them indiscriminately, killing the uncle on the spot. He then fled the scene, the OC said.

The injured was first admitted to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital and he was later shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Polash Roy, resident medical officer of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Police held Ahad yesterday morning, said OC Sohel.

Police earlier announced Tk 50,000 bounty on Ahad, said Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sreemangal Police Station.
