Put more pressure on Myanmar
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged Japan to mount pressure on Myanmar to take 1.1 million Rohingyas back from Bangladesh, UNB reports.
“They have to take the Rohingyas back. These Rohingya people are a big burden for Bangladesh. How long will we host them?” she asked when outgoing Japanese Ambassador Hiroyasu Izumi met her at her Sangsad Bhaban office.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
The Japanese envoy mentioned that his country’s sympathy is always with Bangladesh, Karim said.
He highly appreciated that Bangladesh gave shelter to the refugees.
Hiroyasu Izumi also appreciated Bangladesh for not constructing fences along the border.
He said Bangladesh did not get into any conflict with Myanmar over the issue and hailed the government for the peaceful negotiation with Myanmar government.
The Japanese envoy said his country was committed to continuing its long-term support for the overall development of Bangladesh.
Hiroyasu Izumi particularly mentioned that Japan’s automobile company Mazda is keen to set up a plant in Bangladesh.
Hasina mentioned her government’s initiative to establish an exclusive tourist zone at Sabrong in Cox’s Bazar. She said Japanese entrepreneurs could invest there.
The outgoing ambassador, on behalf of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, invited Hasina to an official visit to Japan in March next year.
CHINA TO CONTINUE COOPERATION
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday urged China to continue to persuade the Myanmar authorities to take back the Rohingyas, BSS reports.
“China has good relations with Myanmar and if China continues to persuade Myanmar, it would be possible to solve the Rohingya crisis peacefully and in a sustainable manner,” Kamal said, quoting Chinese Ambassador Zhang Zuo, who made a courtesy call on him at his ministry office.
The minister said the forcibly displaced Rohingyas must go back to their homeland from Bangladesh.
The Chinese envoy reassured the minister that his country would continue to extend cooperation for quick repatriation of Rohingyas to the place of their origin in Myanmar, Kamal said.
