Police recover mutilated body of ex-army man
Police recovered the mutilated body of a man from the Bay near Mirsharai Economic Zone in Chattogram yesterday morning.
Deceased Nannu Miah, 46, son of Abdul Haque Mollah hailing from Faridpur, was the assistant of a speedboat driver of Wahid Construction Ltd, said Sub-Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman of Jorarganj Police Station.
He was a retired lance corporal of the Bangladesh Army, the SI said.
Mahfuzur said the body was recovered from sea, near block number-1 of China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd in the economic zone.
“Both of his eyes and ears, and lower lip were missing and his forehead was smashed. There were injury marks on his head and bruises all over his body,” he said, adding that the deceased was probably beaten up with iron rods.
Officials of the company alleged that Nannu was killed by employees of China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd, a Chinese construction firm, on Friday night.
Major (retd) Rezaul Karim, project director of Wahid Construction Ltd, told The Daily Star that they had to go to one of their project sites using the shore adjacent to China Harbour Company Ltd.
“The staffers of China Harbour took one of our speedboats from the shore around 5:00pm on Friday. Later, their officials told us to take back the boat at 9:00pm. Five of our men, including Nannu, went there to take back the boat. At least 25 Chinese men then attacked them with rods, sticks, and sharp weapons,” Rezaul claimed.
“Our staffers, other than Nannu, managed to flee the spot,” he said.
No official of China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd could be reached for comment.
A murder case was filed late last night with Jorarganj Police Station in this connection.
