One killed in AL factional clash
An elderly man was killed and nine others were injured in a factional clash between two rival groups of the ruling Awami League over putting up a fence in Joypurhat’s Kalai upazila on Friday night.
The dead, Md Samsuddin, 59, was from Kusumsara village of the same upazila.
Locals said Minfuzur Rahman Milon, organising secretary of Joypurhat district AL, and Shawkat Habib Talukder, member of the same AL unit, had a long-standing rivalry. Minfuzur is the chairman of Kalai upazila and Shawkat is the chairman of Matrai union parishad in the same upazila.
Mehdi Hasan, night guard of Kusumsara Government Primary School, said his father Samsuddin was a stand-in for him on Friday night as he was sick.
Around 9.00pm, some 30 supporters of Minfuzur went to the school to put up a fence around a part of the school land, he said.
Facing resistance from Samsuddin, they beat him up with sticks, leaving him badly injured.
As the news spread in the area, some supporters of Shawkat rushed there and clashed with the rival group. Both the groups carried sharp weapons, said police.
Police later went to the school and brought the situation under control.
Locals sent the 10 injured to Kalai Upazila Health Complex. Of them, Samsuddin was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura on Friday night as his condition deteriorated.
He died at the hospital around 10:00am yesterday.
Later in the day, an autopsy was carried out on Samsuddin’s body at Joypurhat Modern Hospital. The nine other injured were undergoing treatment at the hospital, said police.
Abdul Hannan, a ward member of Matrai UP, filed a case with Kalai Police Station in connection with the incident.
Abdul Malek, inspector (investigation) of the police station, said a police team was deployed at the school to prevent any deterioration in law and order.
He said they picked up Md Shamim, an accused in the case, from Kusumsara village yesterday.Earlier on March 16, two people were killed in a post-UP election clash between the supporters of the two AL leaders in the upazila.
