Observer group now protests
Saarc Human Rights Foundation, an election observer group, yesterday protested a report of Reuters that came out on Tuesday.
Reuters reported that a top official of the foundation and its foreign volunteers regretted participating in the election observation process, casting doubt on the credibility of a polls won overwhelmingly by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her alliance.
Abed Ali, secretary general of Saarc Human Rights Foundation, protested the report in a statement.
The election observer group said that the Bangladesh correspondent for the London-based news agency -- Reuters -- distorted the comment of the foundation’s President Mohammad Abdus Salam and produced “false, fabricated and baseless” news.
Reuters reported that Salam said, “Now I have come to know everything, and can say that the election was not free and fair.”
The news created confusion in local and international arena over the 11th parliamentary polls, alleged Saarc Human Rights Foundation.
The 75-year-old former high court division justice Salam said it was really unfortunate that a news agency like Reuters published “false news” and distorted comments.
