Muhammad Jahangir no more
Renowned media personality Muhammad Jahangir, also executive director of Centre for Development Communication, passed away early yesterday at the age of 68.
Jahangir breathed his last at 12:40am at Asgar Ali Hospital in Dhaka’s Gandaria, his family sources said.
“My father Muhammad Jahangir is no more… Please keep him in your prayers,” his son Apurba Jahangir wrote on his Facebook post.
Jahangir, younger brother of Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, had been suffering from myelofibrosis (a form of cancer), Apurba told The Daily Star.
He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and put on life support the next day. He left behind his three children, wife and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Jatiya Press Club and a second janaza was held at a mosque adjacent to his Shantinagar residence after Asr prayers yesterday.
He was buried at Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur, Apurba said.
Jahangir, former student of Dhaka University, had written and edited 25 books, mostly on media and journalism, according to the official website of Nrityanchal Dance Company -- of which he was a coordinator.
Besides, he used to write columns for several newspapers, including Prothom Alo and the daily Azadi.
He was the host of the first live television talk show in Bangladesh, “Abhimat”, on BTV.
He was a teacher of media and communication at two private universities in Dhaka. He was closely connected with the TV channels of Bangladesh as a planner and programme presenter on politics and current national and international issues.
Jahangir was a member of the executive committee of International Theatre Institute’s Bangladesh chapter and also a member of the Theater drama troupe.
