UP member, 4 others held over rape of housewife
Police arrested four people for allegedly gang-raping a housewife in Noakhali's Senbagh on Thursday night.
A union parishad member was also held for holding an illegal arbitration to settle the issue
The five were arrested after the victim, 32, filed a case with Senbagh Police Station on Thursday against 11 people, said Abdul Baten Mridha, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The rape incident happened on the night of September 5.
On Thursday night, Senbagh police raided Beejbagh area and held the five, including Abu Bakar Siddique, member of Ward-3 of Beejbagh Union, said the OC.
The other arrestees are: Didar, Gafur, Selim, and Alamgir Hossain.
A Noakhali court sent the arrestees to jail yesterday.
According to the case statement, the victim had a quarrel with her husband over family affairs around a week ago before the rape incident. She then went to her father's house in Companiganj upazila.
Later, the woman informed her husband's friend Didar about the matter over mobile phone. After hearing everything, Didar asked her to meet him in a park of Feni city on September 5, saying that he would talk to her and help settle the problem with her husband.
She went to Feni and met Didar, who told her that he would take her to her husband's house in Senbagh at night.
Around 10:00pm, Didar took the woman to a secluded place in Kazirkhil area of Beejbagh and he along with three others raped her, the victim alleged.
Two others also assisted them.
When the UP member, Abu Bakar Siddique, came to know about the incident, he held a village arbitration the next morning.
At the arbitration, he called the woman of "loose character", beat her up and sent her back to her father's house in Companiganj, according to the case statement.
The victim went to Senbagh Police Station on Thursday and filed the case against 11 people, said the OC.
Six are accused in connection with the rape and five others, including the UP member, for holding the arbitration, the police officer added.
The victim was sent to Noakhali General Hospital for medical tests.
