Man dies in Rab custody hrs after arrest
An alleged drug peddler died in Rab custody around midnight on Thursday, hours after his arrest in Patuakhali.
The victim is Shakil Khan, 28, of Romonathsen village in Dashmina upazila, who stood accused in three drug cases filed with Dashmina Police Station, said police.
Shoed Ahamed Khan, company commander at Patuakhali camp of Rab-8, told local journalists that they arrested Shakil from Purbo Alipur village in the upazila on Thursday evening.
He added that some yaba pills were with Shakil and he swallowed some of them at that time. Fifteen more tablets were recovered from his possession.
The Rab team then started for Patuakhali with Shakil. But when the team arrived at Boga ferry ghat, Shakil fell sick and was admitted to Baufal Upazila Health Complex. He died there around midnight on Thursday, the official added.
Akhtaruzzaman, medical officer at the health complex, said Rab members brought Shakil there around 11:10pm. They said Shakil became sick as he swallowed yaba tablets.
Asked if he took yaba pills, Shakil nodded his head, said the physician, adding, “We immediately took steps for washing his stomach but he died.”
Khondakar Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Baufal Police Station, said the body was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
An unnatural death case was filed with the police station, he said.
Contacted over phone, Shakil's father Shah Alam declined to comment on the incident.
