A kidnap, a killing and a shootout
A ninth grader, who allegedly abducted and killed a younger boy, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Jashore's Monirampur upazila early yesterday, hours after he was detained.
Officers claimed that they caught Billal in Keshabpur upazila on Tuesday and he admitted to abducting a fourth grader during primary interrogation.
Billal, a resident of Fedaipur village, was a student of Gopalpur High School in Monirampur. Police claimed he was 19.
Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Monirampur Police Station, said Billal abducted Tarif Hossain, a fourth grader at Gopalpur Government Primary School, on Sunday and demanded a ransom of Tk 5 lakh from his family over the phone. He gave the family members a bKash agent's number to send the money.
The following day, Tarif's father filed a general diary with Monirampur Police Station.
On Tuesday, Billal was told that the money was sent to the bKash agent and police caught him when he went to the agent's location.
The Monirampur OC said a police team accompanied by Billal went to Satnol Bridge area around 3:00am yesterday to look for Tarif's body.
The body was found, but sensing the presence of law enforcers, Billal's associates opened fire at police, prompting the cops to fire retaliatory shots in self-defence, said the officer.
At one stage, Billal was caught in the line of fire and died, he said, adding that a firearm and a bullet were found at the scene.
Police also detained two other suspects Lima Khatun, 20, and Masum Billah, 35, from Keshabpur early yesterday in connection with the abduction of Tarif.
Law enforcers handed over the two bodies to their relatives yesterday after autopsies at Jashore General Hospital.
Talking to reporters at the hospital, Tarif's uncle Akhter Hossain said his nephew along with his twin brother went to play cricket around 4:30pm on Sunday. But Tarif didn't return home.
OC Shahidul added that agitated locals in Fedaipur torched Billal's home around 9:00pm when his body was brought to the village last night.
Fire fighters extinguished the blaze, he added.
