Int’l flights from HSIA resumes today
Flight operations on the international routes, except China, will resume today on a limited scale after over three months' suspension of flights to and from Bangladesh due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Initially, only two airlines -- Biman and Qatar Airways -- will operate while strictly following health and Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh guidelines to contain the spread of coronavirus, Caab Chairman Air Vice Marshal MA Mofidur Rahman told The Daily Star.
Biman will operate on the Dhaka-London-Dhaka route while Qatar Airways will be allowed to carry only transit passengers to Doha on their way to other destinations as Qatar has barred passengers from Bangladesh from entering their country, he said.
"But they will be able to carry transit passengers to other countries via Doha," added the Caab boss.
Qatar will start operating transit flights from today and will operate three flights each week.
Biman will operate a weekly flight on the London route. The first post-resumption flight will embark on the Dhaka-London route on June 21, sources said.
In early May, Caab issued guidelines for air operators, airports, and passengers as part of its efforts to resume flight operations on domestic and international routes on a limited scale.
Limited scale operations on three out of seven domestic routes resumed on June 1.
Only US-Bangla Airlines and Novoair are operating domestic flights while Biman stopped operating flights on domestic routes following underwhelming response from passengers.
Instead of operating domestic flights, Biman offered its aircraft for special chartered flights on all seven domestic routes at a cost of Tk 3 to Tk 5 lakh.
The government from March 16 suspended passenger flight operations with all countries, except China, to contain the transmission of Covid-19 in Bangladesh.
