Hallmark Scam: SC scraps HC bail order for Jasmine
The Supreme Court yesterday scrapped a High Court verdict that granted bail to Hallmark Group Chairman Jasmine Islam in a corruption case.
The apex court also ordered Jasmine to surrender to the trial court concerned in four weeks.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order after disposing of a leave to appeal filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission challenging the HC’s bail order to Jasmine.
The trial court will send Jasmine to jail after she surrenders to it, ACC’s lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.
On November 1, 2016, the ACC filed the corruption case with Motijheel Police Station accusing Jasmine and 15 others on charge of misappropriating Tk 85.87 crore from Janata Bank.
On November 5, 2017, following a bail petition filed by Jasmine, the HC issued a rule asking the ACC and the government to explain why she should not be granted bail in the case.
The HC on March 19 this year granted permanent bail to Jasmine in this case.
Jasmine, also the wife of Hallmark Group Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud, was accused in the charge sheets of all 11 cases filed in October 2012 by the ACC over misappropriation of more than Tk 1,568 crore.
On July 11 last year, a Dhaka court sentenced Jasmine to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed over her failure to submit her wealth statement to the ACC within a specified time.
Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury appeared for Jasmine.
