‘Gunfight’ with Rab: Rohingya ‘robber’ killed in Teknaf
A Rohingya man was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Cox’s Bazar early yesterday.
The dead, Md Ilias, 40, was from Jadimura Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Rab said, adding that the victim was the member of a robber gang.
Zakir, ringleader of a Rohingya robber gang based in Jadimura camp, and his accomplices on Monday night went to collect extortion from nearby Nayapara Rohingya camp where they had a clash with the camp dwellers, said Mirza Shahed Mahtab, company commander of Rab-15.
Being informed, a Rab team conducted a raid to detain Zakir at Jadimura camp early yesterday.
Sensing presence of law enforcers, the robber gang opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate, which eventually triggered a “gunfight”.
Ilias caught a bullet during the incident and was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Three Rab men were also injured during the gunfight, said Mirza.
Two firearms and four bullets were recovered from the spot, he added.
