‘Gunfight’ with Cops: Accused in 12 cases killed
A suspected criminal was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi area on Friday night, few hours after he was arrested.
The dead -- Awlad Hossain Mithun, 35 -- was accused in 12 cases filed over murder, illegal possession of arms, drugs and others, said Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of police in the district.
Abdul Gaffar, sub-inspector of Narsingdi DB police, said Mithun and his accomplice Sohel, 25, were held on Friday afternoon.
Based on their information, a police team, along with Mithun, conducted a raid in the area to recover firearms. As soon as the law enforcers reached the area, criminals opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, he claimed.
At one point of the “gunfight”, Mithun was caught in the line of fire. He was then rushed to Narsingdi Genral Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he added.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Two policemen were also injured during the “gunfight”, SI Gaffar said.
According to the police official, three more men -- Mehedi Hassan, 25, Mainul, 24, Hridoy, 22 -- were held from the spot, police claimed.
Police also claimed to have recovered two foreign pistols, one pipe gun and eight bullets from the spot.
The Daily Star, however, could not independently verify the police claims.
