Fakhrul blasts Hasina for gas price hike
Blasting the prime minister for her argument in favour of hiking gas prices, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the price was increased to serve the interest of some ruling party men.
“You see the drum of development is being beaten all the time…. We are seeing very closely that the money being taken out of people’s pockets is being spent for the benefit of some ruling party men,” he said.
Fakhrul was addressing a programme organised by Doctors Association of Bangladesh, a platform of pro-BNP physicians, at Dhaka Ladies Club.
“We know it for sure that you have to pay a price for development. But for whom do you pay the price? You have to pay the price for the development of common people,” the BNP leader said.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told journalists that people should accept the gas price hike for the sake of the country’s development as the government had to import LNG at a higher cost.
Speaking at a press conference at the Gono Bhaban, the PM said, “If you truly want economic development, you will have to accept it [gas price hike].”
Fakhrul yesterday alleged that the government was going to turn the country into a dependent state without creating jobs for the educated unemployed youths.
He called upon the people to come forward to wage a strong movement against the Awami League.
