Ensure mother’s name in all ID documents
The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to properly implement the gazette notification that mandated the use of mother’s name along with the father’s name in all identity documents.
Secretaries to the ministries of home affairs and law, Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission and the Supreme Court’s registrar general have been directed to respond to the rule within four weeks.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the rule in response to a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Jobaida Parveen.
In the petition, she said that the provision of using mothers’ name in all the identity forms and documents is not being followed in different documents, particularly in the judicial papers.
The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs issued a gazette notification in this regard on August 27, 2000.
The petitioner also prayed to the High Court to pass an order directing the government to take steps so that the gazette notification is properly followed.
Advocate Suraiya Begum appeared for the petitioner.
