Doctor, cop sent to jail in dowry cases
Courts in Joypurhat have sent a doctor and a police officer to jail in separate dowry cases filed by their wives.
Judge Iqbal Bahar of Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court yesterday rejected the bail petition of Bibhas Kumar Sharma, 33, medical officer of Narail Sadar Hospital.
Lawyer Nripendranath Mondal said Bibhas used to torture his wife Dr Choiti Roy as her family refused to pay Tk 10 lakh as dowry.
As he forced her out of their home, the wife filed the case with the court on September 12 this year.
Bibhas was on bail granted by the High Court. He appeared before the magistrate court yesterday and prayed for further bail which the court rejected, said the lawyer.
Meanwhile, Tariqul Islam, a traffic sergeant in Bogura, was sent to jail on December 2 in another such case.
Nahid Akhtar, judge of the judicial magistrate’s court, denied the bail petition of Tariqul when he surrendered to the court, and sent him to jail.
The court officials said Tariqul demanded Tk 20 lakh as dowry form his wife Maya Akter.
The sergeant often used to beat up his wife as her family refused to pay the dowry.
Maya filed the case with the court on November 14, officials said.
