Chandpur Madrasa: 44 students hurt in roof collapse
At least 44 students were injured after the ceiling of a madrasa and orphanage building collapsed on them at Matlab Uttar upazila on Saturday night.
Of the injured, 13 are in critical condition. One of them, Siam, 10, was shifted to The National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Dhaka for better treatment, said Ahmmad Ullah, a teacher of the madrasa. The other 12 critically injured were receiving treatment at Chandpur Government General Hospital.
The rest received treatment at local health complexes.
Around 13 of the 44 victims are orphans, said Shahensha Selim, director of the madrasa.
Officials of the district administration claimed they declared the Farazikandi Complex, where the Al-Amin Madrasa and Orphanage is located, abandoned earlier.
Authorities said over 100 children had gathered on the rooftop of the three-storey building to discuss Victory Day programme preparations with their teachers, when the middle portion of the roof suddenly collapsed.
On information, fire service officials rushed to the spot and recused the victims. Locals also joined the rescue operation, said Md Shahid Ullah, principal of the madrasa’s girl’s section.
Speaking to journalists, Chandpur’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Mohammad Shawkat Osman said the district administration had declared the building abandoned.
“Nevertheless, the madrasa authorities gathered the students there defying the declaration. We are investigating the incident,” he added.
District Deputy Commissioner Md Mazedur Rahman Khan, District Superintendent of Police and other senior officials visited the spot.
