Botched Bank Robbery: Robbers hurl acid at guard, stab Ansar member
Robbers carried out acid attack on a security guard and stabbed another after failing to rob a bank in Bogura's Gabtali upazila early yesterday.
The incident happened at the Sabekpara branch of Rupali Bank, said police.
Analysing CCTV footage, Sabina Yasmin, assistant superintendent of police (Gabtali circle), said two robbers in masks and PPE sneaked into the bank from the roof.
One of the criminals disconnected a CCTV camera set up near a staircase outside the gate of the bank and went in. The other robber waited outside.
At that time, Ansar members Masud Rana, 28, and Habibur Rahman, 25, stopped the robber who was waiting outside. At one point, the robber started arguing with the guards. He then took out a bottle of acid from his pocket and threw acid on Habibur. He also stabbed Masud.
As the guards started shouting, the robbers fled using the roof, Sabina said.
The ASP said they were trying to arrest the robbers.
Motahar Hossain, manager of the branch of Rupali Bank, said, "When robbers entered the bank, the Ansar members began shouting. At this, the criminals stabbed Masud and threw acid on Habibur. Later, locals rescued them and sent them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.
They were being treated there, said the ASP.
The robbers could not take anything.
A case was being filed with Gabtali Police Station over the incident, said the manager.
