Bangabandhu Bridge Line: Rail service halted for an hour as train hits truck
A passenger of a pickup was killed and its driver and his helper helper were injured as the vehicle collided head-on with a truck on Bangabandhu Bridge East Link Road in Tangail's Kalihati upazila yesterday.
The victim's identity could not be known until last night.
The accident took place in Hatia area around 7:30am. After the collision, the truck skidded off the road and fell on the adjacent Joydebpur-Bangabandhu Bridge rail line, said Kazi Ayub Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.
In the meantime, Dhaka-bound Sirajganj Express train leaving from Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station hit the truck on the rail line.
No train passengers were hurt in the incident, said Station Master Rezaul Karim.
The train's engine oil tank got leaked, he said, adding that the train remained stuck there for around an hour.
Rail communications between Dhaka and the north and south-western districts remained halted until police could remove the truck from the line around 8:45am, OC Ayub said.
The train managed to go to nearby Gharinda Railway Station to get the tank repaired and then left for Dhaka.
The Bangabandhu Bridge East Link Road and Joydevpur-Bangabandhu Bridge rail line go side by side in a stretch of 13km from Char Bhabla to the Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station.
The distance between the highway and the railway line is less than 20 feet at several points of the 13km stretch. As there is no barrier between the highway and the railway line, vehicles involved in accidents on the highway sometimes skid off the road and fall on the adjacent rail line.
