Anti-narcotics campaigner murdered in Narayanganj
A woman was beaten to death for protesting drug peddling at Tanbazar in Narayanganj city last evening.
The victim, Arzu Begum, 40, was the wife of Aktar Hossain of the area.
Her daughter Lucky said her mother had been campaigning against drugs for a long time which led to a rivalry with local drug peddler Ramzan.
Lawyer Hamida Begum appeared for drug peddlers, including Ramzan, in the court, she said.
Quoting locals, Mizanur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, said Arzu along with some locals brought out an anti-drug procession and went to Hamida's house at Tanbazar yesterday afternoon. They demanded that Hamida should not defend drug peddlers and addicts in the court, the official said.
Later, locals and Hamida were locked into an altercation. At one stage, two supporters of Hamida beat up Arzu mercilessly, leaving her critically injured.
She was rushed to Narayanganj General Hospital where doctors declared her dead, the police official added.
Police detained six people, including Hamida, in this connection.
