Another cop dies from Covid-19
Another police officer, who tested Covid-19 positive days after suffering a stroke, died at Impulse Hospital in the capital yesterday afternoon.
Rasel Biswas, 35, a sub-inspector of Special Branch of police, was admitted to the hospital after he was diagnosed with coronavirus on May 24.
He breathed his last yesterday afternoon, said Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media) of Police Headquarters.
With Rasel, 15 police personnel have died so far after being infected with Covid-19 while discharging their duties across the country.
Rasel had a brain stroke a week ago and he was first admitted to National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital. He was shifted to Impulse Hospital after he tested Covid-19 positive, Dr Emdadul Haque, superintendent of police at Central Police Hospital, told The Daily Star.
Rasel of Bagerhat left behind his wife, son, and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
On May 24, Razu Ahmed, an inspector of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, breathed his last at the Central Police Hospital's ICU.
Hailed from Chandpur, Razu left behind his wife, a son, and a daughter.
Earlier, constables Nekbar Hossain, Naimul Haque, Jalal Uddin Khoka, Mokhlesur Rahman Asheq Mahmud, and Jasim Uddin; Nayek Mamunur Rashid, Assistant Sub-inspector Raghunath Roy; ASI Abdul Khaleq; Sub-inspector Sultanul Arefin; SI Mosharraf Hossain, SI Mujibur Rahman Talukder; and SI Nazir Uddin died from Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the number of infected police personnel reached 4,258 till yesterday noon. At least 1,514 of them are from Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to Police Headquarters.
Of the infected, 1,378 recovered till yesterday, and many of them joined their work.
Nearly 5,000 others are in isolation and quarantine across the country.
The authorities have recently booked Impulse private hospital to treat their members as the Central Police Hospital is struggling to deal with a huge number of patients.
