A Dinajpur court yesterday handed capital punishment to five people for abducting and killing a four-year-old boy in the district’s Ghoraghat upazila in 2015.
The five are Mamunur Rashid, 22, Zillur Rahman, 20, his brother Jewel Islam, 27, Humayun Kabir Sagar, 25, and his brother Firoz Kabir, 20. All of them are from the upazila’s Kadirnagar village.
Sharif Uddin Ahmed, judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Dinajpur, passed the order in a packed courtroom around 4:00pm in the presence of the five convicts.
The court, however, acquitted six other accused in the case.
According to the prosecution, a gang of criminals abducted Parsha Saha while he was playing near his home in Kadirnagar village on November 11, 2015.
The abductors demanded Tk 10 lakh in ransom for his release. As the boy’s family could not arrange the money, the criminals killed him and dumped his body at a graveyard in nearby Kazipara village.
Police recovered the body the next morning and sent it to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The killers gouged the eyes out, said the law enforcers.
The same day, the victim’s father Kesham Saha filed a murder case with Ghoraghat Police Station. Later, police pressed charge sheet against 11 people.
