5-yr jail for filing false dowry cases
Parliament last night passed the Dowry Prohibition Bill, 2018, with a provision for punishment of individuals for filing false cases.
State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze placed the bill in the House and it was passed in a voice vote. The proposed law replaces the dowry prevention law of 1980.
A person could be sentenced to five years' imprisonment or fined Tk 50,000 or both for filing false cases, as per a provision of the new law.
Another provision specifies the fine for demanding or giving dowry. There was no specific financial penalty mentioned in the law.
According to the provision, if a person demands or gives dowry, he or she could be punished with one to five years' imprisonment or a fine up to Tk 50,000 or both.
