4 people die of alcohol poisoning
Four people died and two others fell sick after excessive alcohol consumption in different areas of the district's Kaliganj upazila of the district on Friday night.
The dead were identified as Munna Das, 35, son of Akhil Das; and Pinto Biswas, 30, son of Bancharam Das, of Collegepara area; Shubhankar alias Tito Karmakar, 45, son of Bimal Mitra of Bhatpara village; and Bikash Biswas, 35, son of Bimal Biswas of Balidapara village.
All four of them died during treatment in hospitals of Kaliganj and Jashore.
Dr Shafayat Hossain of Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex said the four died of alcohol poisoning after drinking excessive amounts of expired wine.
Meanwhile, two others --Tapan Das, 29, son of Nimai Das, and Nirmol Chandra, 31, son of Aghor Chandra, of Nischintapur village -- were undergoing treatment at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.
Munna's brother Antor Das said his brother fell sick after drinking excessive alcohol around 7:00pm, during the last day of the Durga Puja celebrations (Dasami). He was first taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex and then shifted to Jashore Medical College Hospital where he died.
Office-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station Younus Ali said after a meeting with the Puja Udjapan committee, people were advised to refrain from alcohol consumption during celebrations.
