36 more die, 1,457 infected with Covid
The number of new Covid-19 cases dropped slightly as the health directorate yesterday reported 1,457 cases, including three Indian returnees in Jashore.
Besides, a Covid-19 patient, who returned from India recently, died in Chuadanga yesterday.
With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases reached 7,85,194, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In the previous day, 1,608 people tested positive for the virus.
With yesterday's three people in Jashore, 29 Indian returnees have so far been diagnosed with Covid-19.
Of them, six were infected with the Indian variant which the World Health Organisation has announced as a "variant of concern". This variant, responsible for the recent health disaster in India, has spread over 40 countries so far.
The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has not yet said in which level this variant has spread in the country.
Experts, however, said this variant is a threat for the country.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate yesterday also decreased slightly -- to 7.5 percent from the previous day's 7.83 percent.
From Saturday's 6.95 percent, the positivity rate started rising again compared to a steep rise during the ongoing second wave of Covid-19.
With the latest count, the overall positivity rate stands at 13.60 percent.
In 24 hours ending at 8:00am yesterday, 36 people died from coronavirus, taking the death toll to 12,284.
The death rate is now 1.56 percent.
At least 1,378 Covid-19 patients recovered during the same 24 hours.
The total number of recoveries was 7,27,510 and the recovery rate stands at 92.65 percent.
Among yesterday's 36 deceased, 26 were men and 10 women. Two of them were aged between 21 and 30, five between 41 and 50, one was between 31 and 40, nine were within 51-60 and 19 above 60 years old, added the DGHS release.
Meanwhile, the three Bangladeshis, who tested positive for Covid-19 in Jashore, were among the total 22 positive cases in Jashore yesterday, reports our Benapole correspondent.
They were admitted to the corona unit at Jashore Medical College Hospital yesterday, said Rehnewaz Rony, medical officer of civil surgeon's office in the district.
In another development, the Indian returnee who died from Covid-19 in Chuadanga was a female cancer patient, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
On Wednesday, she returned home through Darshana border and was sent to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital isolation ward, said SSM Fateh Akram, resident medical officer of the hospital.
Nasal swab of the deceased was collected to know whether she carried the Indian variant, said the physician.
The deceased was from Chattogram's Sitakunda.
