3 ‘robbers’ killed in ‘gunfight’
Three suspected robbers, including two siblings, were killed in a "gunfight" with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early yesterday.
The dead are Nurul Alam, 40, his younger brother Syed Alam, 35, and Abdul Monaf, 20, of Rongikhali area in Hnila union of the upazila, said police.
Prodip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, claimed they locked into the "gunfight" around 3:00am while conducting a raid in the area on information that a group of heavily armed robbers took position there.
In the "gunfight" that continued for "four hours", five policemen were also injured, he said, adding that the criminals fled the scene at one point of the "gunfight".
Police also claimed to have recovered 18 firearms, 200 rounds of ammunition and 55,000 yaba pills from the spot.
The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital for autopsies, he said, adding the injured policemen received treatment at Taknaf Upazila Health Complex.
"Three cases will be filed in connection with the incident," he added.
