3 killed in ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers
Three people, including two suspected robbers, were killed in two "gunfights" with law enforcers in Cumilla and Narayanganj early yesterday.
The victims of Cumilla incident are Md Emon, 40, and Md Jahangir, 28, while police could not identify the person killed in the "gunfight" with Rab in Narayanganj.
In Cumilla, based on a tip-off that a gang was preparing for a robbery, a team of police and detectives jointly conducted a drive in Old Loharpool Bridge area around 1:30am, reports our local correspondent quoting Porimol Das, sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Cumilla police.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a "gunfight".
Later, police rescued two bullet-hit members of the gang and took them to Cumilla Medical College where the doctors declared them dead, SI Porimol said.
In Narayanganj, a Rab team installed a check-post on the Asian Highway in Kalni area after learning that a private car carrying a drug consignment was heading towards Gazipur, said Major Abdullah Al Mehdi, camp commander of Rab-1 in Gazipur.
"As we signalled to stop the car, its passengers started firing on us that forced us fire back in self-defence," he said.
Later, the Rab personnel found a person with bullet-injury inside the car as the three others fled the scene.
Later, they took him to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Rab members recovered two firearms, two magazines, six bullets, 296 bottles of phensedyl and 5kg of marijuana from the car, the Rab commander said, adding that they also seized the car.
Police could not confirm his identity till filing this report last night.
