2 rescued from mob beatings
Two young men were brought back from the brink of death as they were rescued in separate incidents of mob beatings on Friday in Chattogram and Kushtia.
Before the two could lose their lives to the beatings, they were rescued by relatives and law enforcers.
In the port city, 19-year-old Md Mumin was beaten by a mob in front of Hathazari Upazila Health Complex around 11.00pm on Friday.
Munim, a motorbike salesman, sustained multiple injuries all over his body, including his head, and is now receiving treatment at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Contacted, Belal Uddin Jahangir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station, said they had arrested one Md Kazal, 25, in connection with the incident.
“During primary investigation, we came to know that the incident was pre-planned,” he said, adding, “We are conducting drives to arrest the others involved in the incident.”
Speaking to The Daily Star at CMCH, Munim said, “I went to my ancestral home at Mirer Hat Khondakar Para to offer prayers at my grandfather’s graveyard.
“I was returning to our rented home in Sadar upazila at night. In the absence of transport, I began walking. When I was crossing Abbas-er Pool area near Upazila Health Complex, some four to five men suddenly surrounded me and began beating me.
“I asked them why they were beating me....they did not give any answer and continued beating me with bricks and iron rods,” he said, adding, “Hearing me scream, more people turned up.”
“The attackers told the people that gathered there that I’m child-lifter and continued beating me. The others then joined them in beating me.
“I tried my best to shout but couldn’t. At one point, I thought I was going to die. But then I heard known voices,” he said, adding, “It was two of my neighbours who had come there and rescued me.”
Munim’s brother Md Noman said, “The attackers fled the scene when two of our neighbours appeared on the spot,” he said, adding, “I demand the arrest and punishment of the perpetrators.”
Dr Khurshid Anwar, assistant registrar of the Neurosurgery ward at CMCH, said, “There is a linear fracture on Munim’s skull, but the injury does not seem to be critical,” he said, adding, “The patient is undergoing conservative treatment.”
Meanwhile in Kushtia, 22-year-old Robiul Islam, narrowly escaped a mob beating as police rescued him just in time.
The incident took place at Alamdanga upazila’s Pikepara village in Chuadanga on Friday.
Police said that villagers suddenly caught hold of Robiul, who is intellectually challenged, when he was loitering around the village around 9pm.
Suspecting him to be a child-lifter, they beat him up before locking him inside a house, said Munshi Asaduzzaman, OC of Alamdanga police station.
On information, a team, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the district’s Detective Branch of police Zamir Hossain, rushed to the spot and asked the villagers to hand the over man to police.
Arman Hossain, chairman of Kalidaspur Union Parishad, said the villagers initially refused to hand him over to police, but retracted when the police team reached the spot.
“Robiul is a resident of Naogaon, which is 131km away from Kushtia. He could not say anything on how he had come to the village,” said OC Asaduzzaman.
He added that Robiul will be kept at the Pikepara police camp until his family comes, so that they can investigate the incident further.
