2 killed in ‘shootouts’
Two alleged criminals -- a drug dealer and a robber -- were killed in “gunfights” with law enforcers in Dhaka and Sunamganj early yesterday.
The man who was killed in Dhaka is Mizanur Rahman Mintu alias Megha Mintu, 34. He stood accused in at least 12 murder, arms and drug cases, Md Kamruzzaman, an assistant director of Rab-1, told The Daily Star.
On information that some drug dealers gathered in Swadesh Property area of the capital’s Khilkhet, a Rab patrol team rushed to the area around 1:15am. Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire. The law enforcers then retaliated, he said.
After the “gun battle”, Rab found Mintu bullet-hit. He was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
A Rab member was hurt during the “shootout”, the Rab official said, adding that they recovered three firearms and some yaba tablets from the spot.
Mintu, of Barishal’s Bakerganj upazila, used to live in the capital since 2010. He was involved in drug trading in Gulshan, Baridhara, Bhatara, Khilkhet and nearby areas, Rab said.
In Sunamganj, a suspected robber was killed in a “shootout” with police in Bokarbhanga area of Chhatak upazila, reports UNB.
Laxmindar Ali, 30, of Jiapur village, was accused in 12 robbery cases.
Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station, said police arrested Laxmindar on Sunday night.
Police took him to Bokarbhanga area early Monday to recover firearms, but he tried to flee. A “gunfight” ensued when his associates opened fire, the OC said.
Later, police found the body of Laxmindar and sent it to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
“Five policemen were injured in the incident,” the OC claimed.
