1 killed in ‘turf war’
Leader of a local gang was killed in what police said was a gunfight between two gangs in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila yesterday.
Monirul Islam, 38, was the son of Roisul Islam from Kasba village in the upazila, said Obaidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station.
The OC said Monirul had been leading the gang since his elder brother Jamsed Ali, who founded the gang, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in 2015.
Being tipped off that two gangs were exchanging fire in Katchikhali field area, a team of police raided the spot around 3:45am, OC Obaidur said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals fled the scene, he said.
Later, police recovered bullet-wound Monirul from the spot and took him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead, he added.
Monirul was accused in nine cases filed over different charges, including murder, extortion and robbery, said the OC.
