High molasses prices making gachhis smile

Good price of date molasses this year is making gachhis (date juice extractors) smile in Jhenidah. Kaliganj upazila town and Dakbangla Bazar in Sadar upazila are the two main molasses markets in Jhenidah. 

Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension in Jhenidah said there are around 2 lakh date trees in six upazilas of the district. It is possible to get around 20kg of molasses from a tree a year.

This correspondent talked to some gachhis at Kaliganj upazila town on Friday noon and came to know that they were getting good price this year than that of the previous year.

Last year, they sold an earthen pot of molasses, weighing 11kg, for Tk 300-350 and per kg of patali gur (shaped molasses) for Tk 60-70. This year, they are selling an earthen pot of molasses for Tk 600-700 and per kg of patali gur for Tk 120-130.

Arman Ali, a gachhi in Enayetpur village of Kaliganj upazila, said he has 45 date trees. He gets five earthen pots of juice every day from 15 trees. He extracts juice from trees by turns. He is very glad about the good price of his molasses this year. He had to incur losses last year.
