Govt college teachers continue stoppage
Teachers of government colleges observed a work abstention for the second straight day yesterday, protesting the cancellation of selection grade and time scale from the 8th National Pay Scale.
No classes or tests were held at the 305 state-run colleges, while exams under the National University were deferred.
BCS General Education Association, a platform of teachers and officials under the education cadre, organised the demonstration to press home their four-point demand, including reinstating the selection grade and time scale and upgrading salary of different posts under this cadre.
Officials working in all education boards, government Alia madrasas, teachers' training colleges and commercial colleges also stayed away from work.
Officials of the education cadre remain in the same position for a long time, in some cases for 15 to 20 years. Therefore, the selection grade and time scale were a kind of compensation for that, said Prof IK Selim Ullah Khondaker, secretary general of BCS General Education Association.
"Now we are deprived of the opportunities," he said.
The association announced a fresh programme of forming human chains at all government colleges on October 7.
"We will not be in classes on October 14 and 15 if our demands are not met before October 10," said Selim.
The teachers will also stage a sit-in before the directorate of secondary and higher education on October 18.
PRIMARY TEACHERS' THREAT
Headmasters of government primary schools also threatened agitation against the new pay scale.
At a press briefing yesterday, the teachers under the banner of Bangladesh Government Primary School Headmasters' Association announced that they would go for a nonstop work abstention from October 6 if they were not included in the 10th grade of the pay scale.
Teachers of government primary schools would abstain from work between 9:00am and 12:00pm from October 3 to 5, said convener of the association Reaz Parvez.
Meanwhile, assistant teachers of government primary schools announced observing a work stoppage on Tuesday for realising their 11-point demand, including upgrading their salaries to grade 11.
